Half Guard Passes
Pass #1:
This pass is for when B (bottom player) is playing Z guard or Knee shield guard (his knee is across your belly preventing you from taking away space). If B has his left shin across my stomach I take my right hand and snake it around the outside of B's left leg and get a grip on the bottom leg near the knee. Using my shoulder to keep B's legs smashed together I come up on my free left leg while gripping B's left lapel with my free left hand. My left hand lapel grip is controlling B's upper body and provides me with a base. My right knee which is stuck in half guard switches at an angle (45 degrees) which pushes B's right leg at such an angle that he is unable to keep my foot locked in half guard. From there I can use my right knee as a pivot point and "windshield" over the right leg of B (blocking the right leg with my shin). Once I am blocking the bottom right leg I take a small step with my left leg that is already based out and drive forward. Forcing B onto his back and taking side control/kesa gatame position.
Pass #2:
This pass is from a basic half guard position when B is unable to get lockdown. Lockdown is prevented by placing your locked leg at a 90 degrees angle underneath B's leg. This prevents them from hooking your leg and securing lockdown position. The pass starts with me getting head control by gripping the lat. The lat grip provides a steady grip (big muscle makes it virtually impossible to have your grip slip). With the extreme pressure B's power is forced to go to his opposite side. After maintaining the head control I move my knees around towards the direction of B's head to open up the legs. Because B's head is pointed in the opposite direction he is unable to keep his legs locked and I can use my right hand to push B's left knee to the mat. Once his leg is pressed onto the mat I knee slide my right leg over B's left leaving my ankle over the leg to keep it on the mat. (In most situations B will be able to lock onto your foot which leads onto the rest of the technique. If B is incompetent and doesn't lock the foot up, take mount). Assuming B locks up my foot I take both my hands and grab same side lapels. I base out my left leg and while pushing down on B's chest I switch my hips so I knee slide to the left side instead of right. From there I can place my head underneath B's chin to force the legs to open (if he wants to be a tough bastard and hang onto the foot like his life depends on it). If the forehead into the chin doesn't work I can just take my free left leg and kick his leg off. I should end up in kesa gatame position.
Double Under Pass:
A opens B's guard
Step 1: Both of A's arms simultaneously get underhooks and grab the back of B's belt
Step 2: A pulls B's hips onto the top of their thighs to limit B's hip movement
Step 3: A reaches on hand around the leg and grabs the opposite side lapel with a thumb in grip
Step 4: A widens and lowers their base and passes the guard.
Tip:When reaching for the lapel grip to start the Double Under pass, pull the lapel into you before grabbing. This will crunch the person on bottom downwards and add more pressure to the pass.
