Side-Control Techniques

Side-Control Attacks
Omoplata Attack:
This starts off with partner A in top side control position with an underhook. When partner B pummels for an underhook and then shrimps out to get on their hip to face A, A changes base to a reverse kesa gatame position. Partner A then brings their bottom leg and puts the knee against the hip/stomach of B while maintaining a overhook grip on B's underhooking arm. As partner B continues to come up onto his hip (**In this situation partner B is trying to get into his knees**) A's leg comes up over his back. With their free hand (the hand that is not gripping the underhooking arm) pushes against B's face whilst simultaneously bringing their leg over the arm to an omoplata position. Partner A immediately let goes of the arm grip and grabs B's belt and/or whatever is available to prevent B from rolling out of the omoplata. Partner A's outside hand can be used to base on the floor and allow for A to scoot their hips out to the side to flatten out B and make finishing the omoplata easier.

Side Control -> Back -> Armbar
Position starts with me on top with side control on B's left side. I first want to make sure I have good head control with my right arm. With my free left hand I pull out B's right lapel and feed it to my right hand, pulling it tight. While maintaining head control with my right arm I switch my base (reverse kesa) towards B's head. This leaves enough space for my left hand to come in and get a grip on B's left lapel. Once I have both lapels gripped I can regain my regular side control position. Making sure both my grips are tight I lift the same side leg closest to B's hip (whichever arm that does not have head control). In this case it's my left leg that I lift. From here I drag B onto me and put my left leg in as a hook. I use my left hook to turn B onto their left hip so that I have space to take out my right leg and place my 2nd hook in. For the armbar I chicken wing B's right arm with my right arm and my left arm comes over B's left shoulder to grip my own wrist. I then use my right leg to come up in a modified mount while pulling my left leg free from underneath B's body. Kicking my leg over B's head and maintaining my grip on the arm, I finish the move with the armbar from modified mount

Lapel Choke from Side Control
I am on top of B on the left side with side control. My arm is over their arm so that there is no shoulde pressure on the head.
B turns into me
Step 1: My left arm comes up and around the back of B's head as if going for a guillotine
Step 2: My right hand feeds my lapel to my left hand
Step 3: I switch my base and use my right hand to push against B's knee to flatten them out
Step 4: I go to mount but keep my right leg raised and stretch my body out

Side-Control Escapes
Kesa Gatame Escapes:
B has Kesa Gatame position on my left side but with their head high
Escape 1:
Step 1: I turn my head into B and my right arm comes up and my wrist comes across the head/throat. My left hand comes up to my right forearm to brace against B.
Step 2: I push with my arms while hip escaping to my right
Step 3: I walk my legs to the right and then I bring my right leg over B's throat and close up a triangle grip with my legs
Step 4: I extend with my right leg to break B's Kesa grip and finish with an arm bar

Escape 2:
B has Kesa Gatame position but with their head down so that I cannot push against it. Their right leg is up and close to my hip to prevent me from pushing them backwards.
Step 1: I turn into B and bring my right arm to B's hip.

Step 2: I use my right leg and hook onto B's upraised leg while bringing my right arm over B's back and head to touch the mat.

Step 3: I place my left hand on the mat as well and use my hands and my right hook to extend my body to break the headlock.

Step 4: With my left hand I grab B's wrist and bring it behind their back in a police lock position

Escape 3:
B has Kesa Gatame position but with their head down and both legs extended outwards, preventing me from making a hook.
Step 1: I bring my elbows in and shrimp out to turn into B

Step 2: I use my right arm to get a grip on B's forearm

Step 3: I come up onto my knees and bring B to the opposite side

Step 4: I base my arms against B's lower arm and break the Kesa grip

Escape 4:
B has Kesa Gatame position with my left arm trapped underneath their shoulder/elbow
Step 1: I bring my arm up has high as possible into B's shoulder and secure a gable grip around B's back
Step 2: I bridge into B
Step 3: In one motion I bring B back over my body and come up into side control
